  13. Bouncing around Gopherspace, finding neat files and leaving bookmarks,
  14. is fun for a while. Soon, however, you are going to want to find a
  15. way to locate stuff in Gopherspace a little more quickly.
  16.  
  17. That's where Veronica comes in. Veronica -- Very Easy, Rodent-Oriented,
  18. Net-Wide Index to Computerized Archives -- is a search tool that allows
  19. you to quickly scan Gopherspace for particular files and directories.
  20.  
  21. Veronica is a program that you access through Gopher. Veronica asks
  22. you to enter a keyword, and it then searches through a database
  23. of over 5,500 Gopher servers and over 10 million Gopher "items"
  24. for files and directories whose titles contain your keyword.
  25.  
  26. What makes Veronica REALLY amazing is that it not only finds these
  27. files and directories, it also *GETS* all of these files and directories
  28. and places them on a temporary Gopher menu that you can browse through!
  29. This temporary menu works just like any other Gopher menu!
  30.  
  31. Let's take a look at a basic Veronica search. I access my site's
  32. Gopher client by typing "gopher" on the command line, and the following
  33. menu appears on my screen:

  50. Since I used the UNIX Gopher client the first two days of this week, I
  51. figured it was only fair to use the VM Gopher client for two days as
  52. well :)

  54. I move the cursor down to the "Search Gopherspace using Veronica"
  55. menu line, press enter, and the following menu appears on my screen:

  73. Notice that not only do I get to choose which Veronica program site
  74. I want to conduct my search through, I also get to choose between
  75. two types of searches:
  76.  
  77.      1. "Search Gopherspace by Title word(s)" which will show me EVERY FILE
  78.         AND DIRECTORY in Gopherspace whose title contains my keyword, or
  79.  
  80.      2. "Find ONLY DIRECTORIES by Title word(s)" which will show me ONLY
  81.         THE DIRECTORIES (a.k.a. menus) in Gopherspace whose titles contain
  82.         my keyword.
  83.  
  84. Obviously, the return from an "ONLY DIRECTORIES" search will be much smaller
  85. than that from a "Search Gopherspace" search. If you are using a common
  86. word as your keyword (such as "Internet", "Gopher", "Economics", etc.),
  87. your best bet is to do an "ONLY DIRECTORIES" search to keep from being
  88. flooded with returns :)

  90. I want to do a search of every Gopher directory on the planet that
  91. has the word "Roadmap" in it.
  92.  
  93. The choice of which site I conduct my search through is completely up
  94. to me. There should not be a difference between the sites and the results
  95. that I will get (notice I said *should* not), so I can pick any site that
  96. I want. Since my former best friend used to live in Dallas, I move the
  97. cursor down to the "Find ONLY DIRECTORIES by Title word(s) (via U T
  98. Dallas)" search entry, press enter, and the following appears on my
  99. screen:

  101.           Enter keyword(s):

  103. The keyword I want Veronica to look for is "Roadmap," so I type
  104.  
  105.           Roadmap
  106.  
  107. press enter, prop my feet up on the desk, and wait for something to
  108. appear on my screen.

  110. Eventually, the following menu appears on my screen:

  124. COOL! Although each of these menus are located on different servers
  125. around the world, I can access them ALL from this menu (although
  126. further investigation shows that NONE of these menus have anything
  127. to do with this workshop <<pout>>).

  129. Isn't Veronica NEAT?? There are a few more Veronica commands that you
  130. can use, but I'll let you discover them in tonight's homework :)

  133. ACCESSING VERONICA
  134.  
  135. If you wander around Gopherspace enough, you are bound to find a
  136. site with a link to Veronica. Chances are, your site even has
  137. its own Veronica link!
  138.  
  139. I would strongly recommend finding a Veronica menu somewhere and
  140. planting a bookmark there. You will find that Veronica is an
  141. ESSENTIAL Internet tool, and not having Veronica in your booklist
  142. is going to be a BIG mistake.
  143.  
  144. You can find Veronica menus on most of the Gopher sites that you
  145. can telnet to (see the list of telnet Gopher sites in MAP19),
  146. and you can also access the Veronica menu through the University of
  147. Minnesota's Gopher server (gopher.micro.umn.edu 70).

  150. PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS
  151.  
  152. I have personally had some problems with Veronica. I'm not sure if
  153. I am the only one who has had these problems, or if these problems
  154. are universal -- it is quite possible that I am living in a Veronica
  155. "black hole" and Veronica works perfectly well everywhere else but
  156. Alabama.
  157.  
  158. It is my personal experience that Veronica is so over-burdened that
  159. your chances of getting the Veronica program to accept your keyword
  160. on the first (or even the fifth) try are pretty slim. More likely
  161. than not, you are going to get a
  162.  
  163.        *** Too many connections - Try again soon. ***
  164.  
  165. message. This can become very frustrating very quickly.
  166.  
  167. Other times, you will encounter the now-famous
  168.  
  169.        Empty menu; no items selected or nothing available
  170.  
  171. error message that we discussed the other day. This is also frustrating,
  172. especially when you have to retype your keyword every time this error
  173. appears on your screen.
  174.  
  175. The final error that I seem to encounter a lot in Veronica is the one
  176. that tells me that Veronica has found nothing matching my keyword.
  177. Unfortunately, experience has shown me that this may or may not be accurate.
  178.  
  179. There are a couple of things that you have to remember when using
  180. Veronica:
  181.  
  182.           - Veronica is *incredibly* overloaded
  183.           - If a Veronica keyword search does not work the first
  184.             time, keep trying
  185.           - When Veronica works, it is a thing of beauty
  186.           - When Veronica doesn't work, it gives you error messages
  187.             that may or may not be accurate
  188.           - If you get an error message, try your keyword again
  189.           - The most important ingredient in any Veronica search
  190.             is *PATIENCE*
  191.  
  192. While I was writing this lesson, I was also attempting a Veronica
  193. search using the keyword "Crispen". After 32 attempts, I still have
  194. not been able to get Veronica to accept this keyword without giving
  195. me an error message :(

  202.      2.  Find the "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Veronica"
  203.          and the "How to Compose Veronica Queries" documents and

  206.          Gopherspace Using Veronica" menu on the University of
  207.          Minnesota's Gopher server.
